How to change existing text in a PDF with TechSathi

Replace supported PDF text runs, check spacing and understand when a scan or complex document needs a different workflow.

Check whether the PDF contains text

A PDF can contain selectable digital text, a scanned picture of a page, or a mixture of both. Try selecting a word in a PDF viewer. Being able to select text is a useful first check, though some embedded fonts and objects still cannot be edited by this tool.

Open PDF editor with a verified free account and choose your file. The editor supports up to 50 pages and 250 annotations. Keep the original PDF so you can compare the result or return to the source if a particular text run is unsupported.

Replace a supported text run

Choose “Edit existing text”, select the text run you want to change, enter your replacement and apply it. This changes supported text inside the PDF. The “Add text” control creates a new object and serves a different purpose.

Replacement keeps the original position and font size while using a compatible font. A PDF text run may contain only part of a sentence. Check the selected run before applying a change, especially where the visible sentence consists of several separate objects.

Keep the replacement short enough for the available space. A longer phrase can overlap nearby content because this editor does not reflow whole paragraphs. For a large rewrite, changing the source document and exporting a new PDF is usually easier to control.

Check the result after export

Inspect the changed page at a readable zoom, including punctuation and adjacent lines. Choose “Save & download PDF”, open the exported file and check the same area again. Where text extraction is appropriate, PDF to text can help you review the exported words as well as their appearance.

Undo is available during editing. Saving a browser editing session helps you resume on that browser, but it is not a replacement for downloading your finished PDF and keeping an original backup.

When existing text cannot be changed

Scans, outlined letters and text inside unsupported embedded objects need a different workflow. The editor supports standard-font text and usable ToUnicode mappings, but cannot promise to edit every PDF font or internal structure.

For scanned pages, use Scanned PDF to text and review the recognised text. OCR extracts text; it does not automatically rebuild the original page layout. PDF to Word extracts digital text into an editable document, with simplified layout.

Keep document changes appropriate

Edit documents you are authorised to change. Covering words with a shape or adding text over them does not securely remove the original information. This editor does not provide secure redaction or cryptographic digital signing.

Review existing form fields before page duplication or deletion. The editor requires explicit flattening where a form page needs it; flattening changes editable fields into page content. Inspect every changed page before sharing the result.
